Tompkin’s School

For The Extraordinarily Talented

Once my body stopped trembling, I picked myself up. It felt strange, my feet seemed to fall much lighter on the ground than normal. My head also felt a bit fuzzy. I turned and froze as I caught myself in the reflection of a full-length mirror. I glided forward to get a closer look. My eyelids had sunken into my skull and my eyes were red! I reached up to touch my pallid skin only to gawk at my hands. My fingernails had been replaced with dark, black claws.
“I’m a monster,” I hissed.
My eyes flashed up to meet my reflection once again and soon my clawed hands were the least of my worries. Two black, very large things were moving ever so slightly, blocking the reflection of the rest of the room. I looked over my shoulder to find large, black feathered, wings...

Izara Torvik thought her life was over the moment that her father sent her and her twin brother to a boarding school in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. She soon discovers that the school is not as ordinary as she thought and finds herself thrown into a battle against her inner demons that only have one desire...the desire to kill.

Tompkin’s School is about Izara and her brother Kain who are sent to a boarding school in Oklahoma because they clash with their father’s new mistress. At this point Izzy and Kain seem perfectly normal teens, but when they get to Tompkin’s school strange things begin to happen to both of them. They experience weird dreams and physical transformations and things begin to go very wrong, or very right depending on your viewpoint. The changes are something that Izzy has a very moral dilemma about. They find out the school has a past, which seems to be linked to their strange new powers.
Tompkin’s School isn’t short of action, and the story is intriguing, but I would like to have seen some of the characters and some scenes explored more fully. There’s also a lot of time spent at the beginning establishing characters that as yet haven’t played a significant part, but that may all change in book 2. Tompkin’s School ends on a cliff hanger, so I doubt the second book will be too far away!

Tompkin's School (For The Extraordinarily Talented Book 1) by Tabi Slick

Izara and her twin brother are sent to a boarding school in Oklahoma. It is very different than they imagined, and it will be an adjustment. Soon she discovers it is not an ordinary school, and there are secrets revealed. Izara finds herself in a situation that she never expected, never thought possible. Will she do the right thing even though everything seems to be going against her?

Izara is very likable, she is a teen trying to fit in to a new environment. Then she discovers the secrets the school holds and finds herself in an unexpected and unbelievable situation. Watching how she handles this, and what she must do was intense. A true page turner. Overall I found Tompkin's School to be a fast paced original story, with drama, danger, mystery, supernatural (forces) and a hint of romance. I recommend to Y/A and Adult readers as well.
