Dark Ending

AFTER SURVIVING A FOILED KIDNAPPING AND ATTEMPTED MURDER IN COLORADO, ALEX JONES FINDS HIS LIFE ONCE AGAIN THROWN INTO CHAOS AS THE PAST HE THOUGHT HE BURIED LONG AGO COMES BACK WITH A VENGEANCE.

DARK ENDING, the sequel to An Unsettled Past, fast-forwards seven years to find Alex now working as a homicide detective with the NYPD. Only recently promoted from patrol, he is thrust into the spotlight as the lead investigator on a series of grisly murders after several young women are discovered in Prospect Park; strangled and mutilated.

The investigation gets more personal after several more victims appear, each having cryptic messages from the killer. Alex can’t shake the lingering feeling that somehow his troubling past, the one he thought he buried at the secluded cabin in Colorado has somehow resurrected itself and followed him to New York.

In the end, it's a race against the clock to find the killer and piece together the clues before he strikes again. But will Alex succeed or will this be the concluding chapter in his tumultuous life?

Reviews

We step forward in time with the second book in this series. Alex Jones is back, along with several of the supporting characters from the first book, but he's moved to New York and started working as a detective. His past comes back to haunt him, proving that he was never fully able to escape the evil that plagued him in the first novel.

C.L. Brees has done an excellent job with this new book. If you've read the first novel (which I recommend doing) you will see a significant leap in editorial and writing style. You can tell that this author is improving with each new debut. The plot moves along quickly and will again keep you guessing what might happen next. I will say that I was really surprised by the events toward the end of this book, but I think it nicely sets up what will likely be the 3rd novel in this series.

This book could be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the first in this series before jumping into Dark Ending. You will benefit from a lot of the back story that occurred in book 1.

This would be a great book to read over the winter months, curled up under a blanket. Well done!

I just finished reading C.L. Brees second novel and it did not disappoint!!! I could not put it down. It’s raw, gritty, and heartbreaking. I cannot wait for his next novel. Do yourself a favor: ORDER THIS BOOK!

About C.L. Brees

C.L. Brees, the author of An Unsettled Past, Dark Ending, and Among the Ashes, was born and raised in rural northeast Indiana, a place where sometimes he found the environment a bit too restrictive for his overactive imagination. He had bigger plans and set his sights on exploring the world for inspiration. Currently, he lives in Stuttgart, Germany.

Currently, C.L. Brees has two main goals: releasing the final book of the Alex Jones Series, The Whole Truth, by winter 2019. His second goal is to complete another stand-alone novel, No Place is Safe, by the fall of 2020.

C.L. Brees gained extensive knowledge in the world of criminal justice and forensics from the University of Baltimore, where he earned a Certificate in Crime Scene Investigation, a B.S. in Forensic Science, Magna Cum Laude, and an M.S. in Cyber Forensics in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Before accepting his current overseas assignment, he worked as a criminal justice researcher, as a forensic analyst for a Baltimore law firm, and spent several years canvassing neighborhoods in Baltimore conducting health research for National Institutes of Health.
