Here we grow again! We recently invited Chris Well, of Build Your Brand Academy, to contribute a guest post for us. His "Media Attention: 9 Ways Any Author Can Get It", proved a hit. While working with Chris on that, we were so impressed with his depth of knowledge we decided to recruit him to join our illustrious Team of Industry Experts. Happily, he agreed.
With over 30 years working in broadcasting, print and digital media, Chris has acquired an inside track on what those in the media are looking for. As an author himself, he is well-positioned to teach authors how to cultivate a good working relationship with the media. So if you're looking for the kind of exposure and promotion that money can't buy, be sure to follow Chris here on the BW blog.
To help you get to know him, here's his "how-do-you-do"...
I am thrilled and delighted to be joining the BookWorks team as Media Expert. You can get a quick look at my experience and qualifications in the official bio. But right now, I’d like to pull back the curtain and tell you a little about how I got here…
With Pen in Hand...
All my life, I’ve loved working with words. I have two lives as a writer: as a fiction writer who tends to write mysteries, and as a working member of the media. I’ve been writing stories as far back as the first grade and writing for the press as far back as middle school.
When I got my first book deal, I thought I had it made. However, I soon learned how little attention most authors get from a publisher. I’ve now had experiences with four publishers, with varying degrees of frustration.
I’ve also seen firsthand the challenges of being a self-published author. These books aren’t going to promote themselves!
Meanwhile, in my other writer life, I’ve spent more than 30 years moving from one media opportunity to the next. I’ve been a freelancer, columnist, editor, producer, host, and more.
A few years ago my two lives intersected. Up to that time, my media coverage included all kinds of subjects in business and creative arts. Then I became the editor of a magazine that focused primarily on authors and books.
There I saw a growing number of authors who were desperate to get their books covered by the media—and were going about it all wrong.
So many of these authors (traditional and indies alike) were forced to fend for themselves. No one had taken the time to explain how to present themselves in a professional manner—how to be taken seriously, and position themselves so as not to be dismissed out of hand.
My Lightbulb Moment
That lightbulb moment for me is why I ended up launching my website Build Your Brand Academy. I want to help authors get a fair hearing.
There are no guarantees in life, and that goes double for media coverage. But if you approach these influencers correctly, it’s going to go a lot better for everybody involved.
It’s my firm belief that with the right email to the right person, anyone can get media coverage. That’s why I started Build Your Brand Academy. And that’s why I’m here at BookWorks.
As BW Media Expert I Will Share…
- How to position yourself for media attention
- What the media looks for on an author’s website
- How to create a great media kit yourself
- How to handle yourself in interviews
- How changes in the media landscape work in your favor
- How to leverage even the smallest bit of attention to gain even more coverage
I look forward to helping BookWorks authors understand influencers in the media. I’ll let you in on how media producers think, what they want, and how to grow your brand even when you don’t have a brand-new book. Most of all, I’m going to help you understand that you are more than your book.
I’m so glad to be joining the BW community! I’m ready to serve you.
