Twitter is a great way to meet people, develop relationships, and promote yourself and your book. At the same time, it can also be overwhelming! In Part One of this series, I’ve created the Golden Rules of Twitter, and have highlighted time-saving tools to help you become a Twitter master!

Golden Rules of Twitter
1. Be original, useful and helpful.
3. Every tweet counts! Your followers don’t need to know when you’re washing the dishes, so make sure that what you tweet is useful, or you will lose followers
4. That being said, getting personal with your tweets is OK. You want your followers to get to know you, as well as your book. Just keep in mind my advice above, and make sure to share tweets that matter. If you share tweets that are valuable, Twitter followers will beat a path to your door.
5. It’s ok to repeat your tweets. There’s a lot of content posted every day, so feel free to repeat some of your more important tweets—it’s very likely that some of your followers may have missed your tweet the first time.
Tools to Tweet Effectively
Use socialoomph.com to post tweets to your account for later posting so you don’t have to be sitting on top of Twitter every minute of the day.
You can also auto-follow everyone who follows you – make sure to send a nice welcome message to your new followers.
Embed a link or some other sign-up in your welcome message, which is another great way to capture emails for your newsletter (assuming you have one).
As we mentioned before, due to the sheer volume of tweets, there is a lot of noise on Twitter. Socialoomph.com can help you to filter out the noise and avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Use TweetDeck to see who’s talking about you and then follow them too or comment on their tweet.
Want to stay on top of your market and find stuff to tweet about? Then go to Alltop.com and search for your category. There are thousands of them up there. Here are a few to consider: socialmedia.alltop.com and publishing.alltop.com.
Follow big names in your market on Twitter: this will often bring in their followers too and you want to see what the “big guys” are up to.
The Twitter Image Expand feature only works if you upload your image directly to Twitter via the app or directly on the website—I recommend that you upload your image that way versus other apps. Keep in mind that tweets with images get retweeted 35% more often.
Promote your Twitter account in your email signature line and on your blog.
