Introducing Robin Cutler, Senior Manager of IngramSpark, Ingram Content Group...
I was delighted when my friend Betty Sargent asked me about contributing regular articles to the BookWorks blog. I consider Betty to be publishing royalty with a commitment to authors and great writing that has spanned as many years as I’ve been in the industry. So with humility and honor, I would like to introduce myself to the BookWorks community and tell you about the work that I do on behalf of Ingram Content Group.
I began my career as a book designer at the University of South Carolina Press back in the dark ages before computers. I think my first love was actually the tiny Macintosh SE computer and Adobe software I ordered that immediately moved me to the digital age with wonder and great excitement.
Certainly computer hardware and software evolved quickly and so did my responsibilities as I was promoted through the ranks to assistant director. In time, I left to start my own imprint and had a fair amount of success as a publisher. I tell you this because I want you to know that I’ve been in your shoes as an independent author and publisher. There’s nothing more exciting or challenging than creating a book and bringing it to readers.
Today, I lead a team at Ingram Content Group committed to helping indie publishers distribute their content. Ingram, as many of you know, is the world’s largest book wholesaler/distributor and what I call the “center hub” in the publishing universe. Through Ingram’s catalog, millions of publisher’s titles are made available to 39,000 retail and library partners around the world. You may also know that Ingram is also the leader in print on demand (POD) technology through our company, Lightning Source. This technology combined with the broadest distribution for both print and ebook content is what makes Ingram so powerful. This is a valuable thing to know as you evolve from an author into the business owner of your own content.
Two years ago, we launched the IngramSpark program specifically for independent publishers like you. Through this program, you have access to Ingram’s POD and distribution just like the major publishers. In addition you have the ability to convert your print title into an e-book and distribute it to 70 online retailers including Kindle, Apple, Barnes and Noble and Kobo.
In my monthly posts on BookWorks, my goal is to not only discuss distribution and IngramSpark but to help you navigate the often complex world of publishing. This is truly the best time to be writing, reading and creating books. I’m honored to be able to help you on your publishing journey.
Share your questions/concerns about book distribution in the comments section below and I'll be sure to address them in upcoming posts.
